7 Noticeable Benefits of Natural Hair over relaxed hair

Over the past two years, I’ve noticed a trend of people reverting back to relaxed hair after trying natural hair for a few years. However, after eight years of embracing my natural 4c hair , I can confidently say that I won’t be going back to relaxed hair anytime soon. The benefits I’ve experienced have been life-changing, and I’m excited to share them with you.

7  Benefits of Natural Hair

Although there are a number of benefits to natural hair I am going to be sharing the ones that have had a noticeable and quantifiable effect of my hair.

Note – I am 100%  African born and raised . My hair is mostly type 4c with some  looser curls in the nape area.

Key takeaways

Hair has more volume

Increased hair growth

Softer more defined curls

Better length retention

Reduced hair shedding

Overall heathier scalp

More styling versatility

1. Overall Healthier, More Voluminous Hair

My hair has been thriving in its natural state. I’ve seen tremendous growth that I never thought possible. My hair is thicker, healthier, and more voluminous than ever before.

My relaxed hair was super thin which was one of the main reasons for going natural. It has gotten so much thicker in the few years I have been natural and with a current silk press in comparison the difference has been stunning.

2. Increased Hair Growth

When I had relaxed hair, it was stunted at shoulder length. I was anxious when my natural hair reached the same point, wondering if I’d experience the same growth plateau. But my hair has been growing at a steady rate, with a few setbacks, of course.

It’s amazing to see my hair grow and flourish without the damage caused by relaxers in the past.

3. Increased Softness

My hair is the softest it’s ever been. I no longer have to deal with dry, brittle hair that breaks easily. My natural hair is gentle to the touch, and I love running my fingers through my kinks and  curls.

4. Reduced Hair Shedding

When I had relaxed hair, I experienced excessive shedding. It was frustrating and disheartening to see my hair fall out in clumps especially after getting some braids taken down.

Since going natural, I’ve noticed a significant reduction in hair shedding. My hair stays in place, and I don’t have to worry about any significant hair loss.

5. Better Length Retention

My natural hair retains length better than my relaxed hair ever did. I’m able to grow my hair out without worrying about breakage or split ends. It’s amazing to see my hair grow longer and stronger with each passing day.

I mainly attribute this to natural hair being able to retain more moisture and in turn experience less overall breakage.

6. More Flexibility and Versatility

One of my favorite benefits of having natural hair is the versatility. I can style my hair in so many different ways, from afros to twists and my signature high puff.

I do straighten my hair here and there but I tend to wear my hair in its natural state.

I love experimenting with new styles and finding what works best for me.

7. Improved Scalp Health

My scalp has been noticeably healthier since going natural. I’ve experienced less dandruff and itchiness, which I attribute to the absence of harsh relaxers and chemicals. My scalp feels calm and soothed, and I no longer have to deal with embarrassing flakes and itchiness.

Bonus The Emotional and Mental Benefits of Natural Hair

When I started did not expect to see any mental benefits of having natural hair. Going natural has not only transformed my hair but also my mindset. I’ve learned to love and accept myself, flaws and all. I’ve gained confidence and self-esteem, and I feel more connected to my heritage and culture.
